Junior Races – January 2012
The next race in the calendar will be the January Time Trials. Just turn up at Lakeland Park (off Manor Brow) at 5.30pm on Monday 16th January for races starting at 6.00pm.
This is an unusual race, as individual runners will be set off at one minute intervals on a route up Manor Brow hill. Their times will be taken at the top and recorded. Then the average of two efforts will be taken and the winners decided from that. This has proven a very exciting event in the past, and extremely competitive!
There are no entry fees, anyone can join in, with races for ages 6 to 17 years. Small prizes in 12 separate categories, which gives everyone a good chance of winning something!
Registration from 5.30. Reflective bibs provided for every runner and safety marshall will be out along the route. Just come along and run!
Further details are provided to all local schools. Poster: >>>>
As this is a road race, we will need marshall for safety and for the timekeeping (more complicated than usual). If you can help, please let Martin know on slucem@cockermouth.cumbria.sch.uk

Keswick AC Junior Street Race - Mon 14th Nov 11
| Monday saw an excellent turnout of runners of all ages registering at the Up And Running shop for a range of distances around the streets based on the market square. All dressed in fluorescent jackets, the 26 runners headed up and across the square to the sound of the starting horn. It took many minutes before the first reappeared; some finishing, others completing their first lap or loop. In fact, few but the runners themselves knew which lap they were on, it got that complicated! However, within 20 minutes all were finished without getting lost and they wandered back to the shop for prize giving. A lot of help from many marshals helped to keep the routes safe, so many thanks go out to them. |

Junior Fell Races - July
On Monday 18th July a hardy band met at Sale Fell, Wythop for the last race of the academic year. After a week of fantastic weather the rain had come with force and unpredictability, so organisers resorted to bad weather routes, staying beneath the cloud layer.
The beautiful green paths cunningly concealed their mean ascents and runners were quickly struggling for breath. Fortunately all paths levelled off to some great fast running, with a fast descent to the finish providing much entertainment for the small crowd of spectators.
Well done to Danny Price. As
the only runner in his category, his was a long, lonely run. Rosie Hodgson “enjoyed” the effect of moving up an age category with a longer run while her brother James sprinted in impressively after pushing hard round a fast but very hilly course.
With fewer runners this time, everyone got a prize. It was good to see some younger runners out enjoying the fells with their parents.
Results:
U7 Boys 1st Theo Coates, 2nd James Birkenshaw, 3rd Harris Thompson; U9 Girls Nicole Mattinson; U9 Boys Jacob Fell; U11 Girls 1st Lois Royle, 2nd Jordan Sowerby; U11 Boys Danny Price; U13 Boys Adam Price; U15 Girls Rosie Hodgson;
U15 Boys James Hodgson.
The next season will start as last year with Latrigg; a Monday in the middle of the month. We intend to keep to the same programme of races through the year to provide a variety of accessible events open for free to all. True “sport for all”. Look out for notices at the schools and on these pages.
June Catbells Race Report
In a week of pretty miserable weather, Monday evening turned out clear and sunny with dry conditions underfoot. A sizeable crowd turned out at the car park for Catbells to enjoy some spectacular routes ranging from fast downhill tracks to steep, stony ascents. Everyone enjoyed a good, challenging route no matter what their age or ability. The younger three races set off round the Newlands side of Catbells, with the U11's heading right up to the ridge following a steep groove straight up. The U13's headed off in the opposite direction to take the crest of the ridge while the U15's route took Catbells Terrace round to the steep and stony path further along. All races finished together down a lovelytraversing path along the flank of the fell and back to the starting point at the end of the road
Parents and supporters waited in anticipation and te first runners came to the finish at Skelgill. With only 20 metres to go, Jacob Fell led Tom Stafford in a tight race with only metres between them, having swapped places earlier on the route. They both hurtled down the gravelly track and supporters were heard to groan at the possibility of a tumble. Jacob immediately lost his footing and flew headlong across the path, tumbling spectacularly. Tom siezed his opportunity, narrowly avoiding the stricken runner to take 1st place in the U9's race. Jacob limped home sporting some impressive grazes but soon recovered.
In other races, Anna Campion
made a first appearance, now quaifying for the U6's category, while Adam Price and Dominic Westle had solitary runs as the only competitors on the long U13 and U15 courses respectively. Rumour has it that exams the following day prevented many runners from turning out.
Results: U7 girls Anna Campion; U7
boys 1st Theo Coates, 2nd James Birkenshaw;
U9 boys 1st Tom Stafford, 2nd
Jacob Fell,3rd Ben, 4th Sam Campion; U11 boys 1st Danny Price, 2nd Sam Macey, 3rd Charlie Frankland; U13 boys Adam Price; U15 boys Dominic Westle. All runners received prizes courtesy of Keswick Athletic Club.
These races are
put on once a month purely for the fun of youngsters getting out and enjoying being on the fells. Everyone is welcome and there are no race fees. The next race will be at at Sale Fell, Wythop on Monday 18th July - the last Monday of the school term.
